Owned by the Medici family in the 1700s, it was the first demarcated region with it’s own grape growing rules, establishing the first de facto DOCG in Italy. The 53 km wall separating the Medici’s hunting grounds (now known as Carmignano) was called Barco Reale. Today Capezzana produces 80% of the entire appellation.
